The Ripple of Responsibility: Understanding AI Ethics in Product Development

Details

Join us for an interactive workshop to explore your own personal ethics, the cause and effect of these within society, and a framework for evaluating the decisions we make when building a product.

Event Format:

For this meetup we'll focus on decision-making around ethics with Diane Sieber, professor at the Herbst Program of Engineering, Science, and Society at the University of Colorado at Boulder. All Herbst classes address the personal ethics of each individual student through small seminars that take on difficult texts and big questions, starting with: What does it mean to be human in an increasingly technology-driven world? Diane is an expert in ethical decision making around technology has been studying and teaching ethics in Information Technology (IT) since 1999.

As a group we'll reflect & complete two hands-on exercises to help attendees evaluate their own ethical beliefs, as well as how product teams might include ethics into the product discovery process.

Questions for Discussion:

  • What if your product was wildly successful? What cause/effect might it have on society? (think Amazon direct to consumer as an example).

  • Who might be adversely affected by it's impact? Who will benefit most?

  • Are there groups unrelated to who you're designing for that might be impacted? How should you take these into account?
